About hashirano-kizu
In Japan, families once marked their children’s height directly on the wooden pillars of their homes — small carved notches that became treasured records of childhood. In today’s rental apartments and modern houses, that tradition has become difficult: you can’t carve into walls you don’t own.
hashirano-kizu (“marks on the pillar”) is a solid-wood height marker that brings this tradition back. Mounted on your wall, it becomes a pillar you can freely mark, carve, and engrave with your child’s growth — and take with you when you move.
Features
- Take it with you when you move. The pillar disassembles into three sections (each approx. 70 cm long) so it can travel to your new home — along with every memory marked on it.
- Brass & walnut measuring piece. The measuring slider (“hit”) is crafted from brass and walnut and holds firmly in place with strong neodymium magnets.
- Locally certified timber. Made from Kawachi cedar (and cypress), timber certified by Osaka Prefecture.
- Measures up to 180 cm. Tall enough to keep recording growth all the way into adulthood.
- Gentle on your walls. When removed, only a single small spot needs repair — safe for rental homes.
- Traditional Japanese joinery. The three sections connect using a joint adapted from okkake-daisen-tsugi, a scarf joint technique used by Japanese master carpenters.
- Flat base design. The profile is designed to sit above baseboards, so it mounts flush against the wall.

The Story Behind hashirano-kizu
hashirano-kizu was born when its maker — a carpenter and builder in Osaka, and a parent — moved out of a rental home and wished there were a way to keep the record of his children’s growth.
At the same time, as the operator of a local construction company (Kura-ya), he had often heard from clients rebuilding their family homes: “We wish we could bring the old pillar with the children’s height marks into the new house.” hashirano-kizu is his answer — a pillar you can add to any home, and never have to leave behind.
